Calculus increases headcount by 25%

It hires former COO of Fifth Season Tim Robinson as well as three other recruits

Calculus Capital, one of the oldest and most respected managers in the ‘tax advantaged’ investment sector and a leading investor in UK and international media and entertainment companies today announces the new appointment of Tim Robinson as Senior Adviser, Media and Entertainment.

Tim is the former COO of Fifth Season, a $1bn global film and tv studio based in LA. Prior to that, he held COO roles at Shine Group and Avalon and was a partner at UK media law firm Sheridans. Along the way, Tim has sourced and closed 30+ M&A deals and helped create $3bn+ of shareholder value across multiple global content business exits. Tim is currently the chairperson of production music business The Nerve and is also an experienced consultant helping CEOs, founders and creative entrepreneurs figure out how to find growth, financing and commercial returns for their businesses.

He will bring his extensive network to generate further new deal flow, and his experience to advise Calculus’ media portfolio which includes Jude Law’s Riff Raff Entertainment; Brouhaha Entertainment, co-founded by Oscar nominated producer Gaby Tana and Australian producer Troy Lum; and Wonderhood Studios, founded by former Channel 4 Chief Executive David Abraham. Recent productions by companies in the Calculus media portfolio include the Netflix global hit series Boy Swallows Universe, BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 series Evacuation and the Amazon Prime Video global hit The Burial.

Calculus is further enhancing its services in the media sector. In July, it announced the takeover of the management of Great Point Media’s film and television production finance business, Illium, which provides secured loans to finance film and television production. The company was formerly managed by Great Point Investments, a wholly owned subsidiary of Great Point Media, which was placed into administration following the death of its co-founder Jim Reeve in February. Calculus is maintaining Illium as a trading company providing secured finance for film and television production. Illium recently closed its first loan since Calculus took over.

To support with the ongoing management of Illium, Calculus hired Chris Gould as Financial Planning and Analysis Manager, Brad Noel as a Finance Associate and Jessica Clark as an Investor Relations Associate. Having previously worked at Great Point Media, they join with a particular focus on the Media and Entertainment side of the business.
