What are VCTs?

VCTs were introduced in 1995 to encourage individuals to invest indirectly into small and growing UK trading companies, by offering a range of tax reliefs.

VCTs are listed on the London Stock Exchange. Investors are shareholders in a listed company overseen by an independent board and run by an investment manager, which in the case of Calculus VCT is Calculus Capital Ltd.

To qualify, at least 80% of a VCT’s investments must be in small, qualifying companies (businesses with maximum gross assets of £15 million and fewer than 250 full-time employees) that are unquoted or traded on AIM. A VCT can invest a maximum of 15% of its money into a single company.

The Calculus VCT provides immediate exposure to a diversified portfolio of 30-40 entrepreneurial UK companies with high growth potential. The funds raised by the VCT will be used to provide development and scale-up capital to new investments with robust business models and to help support growth in existing portfolio companies.

Tax Reliefs

  • 30% income tax relief
  • Capital gains on VCT shares are tax-free
  • Dividends are tax-free

Shares have to be held for at least 5 years to retain tax reliefs. It should be noted that there is no guarantee of dividend levels nor preservation of capital value.

The information given above provides only a summary of the tax benefits. The rates shown are based on current UK legislation. Tax benefits depend on the individual circumstances of each investor and may be subject to change in the future. If you are unsure of your tax situation you should seek professional advice from a qualified tax adviser.

Calculus backs the innovators, the experts, the game changers. We invest in entrepreneurial businesses with growth potential, across the fastest growing sectors in the UK:

Technology

The UK is Europe’s number one technology nation, having raised double the amount of VC funding of any European market in 2022*. This hotbed of entrepreneurial activity and innovation presents a strong investment opportunity.

Within technology we predominantly look for companies providing software as a service (SaaS) to an already established client base.

Healthcare

The UK healthcare sector holds the solutions to some of today’s most urgent global challenges. From fighting pandemics to creating treatments to further advance patient care, the UK’s internationally renowned private, public and academic organisations are paving the way to new scientific discoveries.

Within the healthcare sector we typically invest in diagnostics, pharmaceutical services and drug discovery companies with existing partnerships with large pharma.

Entertainment

The creative industries in the UK have grown at more than 1.5x the rate of the wider economy over the past decade**. UK creative content companies have an established track record of producing award winning, commercially successful films and television shows watched by millions worldwide.
